Drunk woman smashed glass over student

By Court Reporter 09/01 Updated: 16/01 16:59

A DRUNK woman who hit an A-level student celebrating the end of his exams over the head with a glass in a Stratford bar has been ordered to pay her victim £1,000 compensation.

A judge at Warwick Crown Court gave insurance claims assessor Zoe Burrows just 28 days to pay the money to injured Patrick Sreenivasaprasad.

The 20-year-old, of Hillside, Wixford, near Bidford, who had admitted maliciously wounding Patrick, was given a community sentence with 12 months supervision and a 7pm curfew every Friday and Saturday for the next 12 weeks.

Prosecutor Aliya Rashid said the incident took place in the Chicago Rock in Stratford, where Patrick had gone out with friends to celebrate the end of their A-level exams.

In the early hours of June 25 an argument flared up between him and Burrows’ brother, and the two of them squared up to each-other.

Patrick’s friend intervened and separated them, but at that point Burrows came up and hit Patrick on the head with a glass or bottle she was holding.

The court heard Burrows had more to drink than was normal for her, and when her brother was jostled she felt protective towards him because he had his jaw broken in an unprovoked attack on a previous occasion.

When she was arrested 20 minutes later, Burrows had blood on her clothing and hand.

She said she was so intoxicated she could not remember what had happened because she had earlier been drinking at a ‘baby shower,’ and had then gone to the Cross Keys pub and Wetherspoons before going to Chicago Rock.

As a result of the attack, Patrick had a number of small cuts to his head which had to be cleaned and glued.

He was an avid cricketer, but because of his injuries he was unable to wear a helmet, so lost his place in the first team.

Shawn Williams, defending, said Burrows had perceived her brother was in danger and drink meant she couldn't judge the situation.

He said Burrows worked as a claims assessor for a Stratford insurance company where she is said to have ‘excellent prospects,’ and also provided netball coaching for youngsters.

She had no previous convictions and ‘felt disgust at what she had done,’ he added.
