Shooting
Williams wins festive charity shoot

04/01 Updated: 12/01 10:32

BINTON Social Club hosted the Stratford Air Gun League’s Charity Christmas Shoot, where shooters from across the league took part in two competitions using open sighted rifles.

The Bill Amos competition involves all shooters using the same rifle, a Webley Mk 3 that was originally owned and used by Bill Amos for over 40 years. The rifle is now owned by Brian Portman who kindly provides the gun each year for the league to use.

Each shooter had five shots at the target to amass the highest score of the evening but most found that mastering the gun with its front and rear sight very challenging. Fred Williams, who has shown his skill with this gun over the recent years, was yet again victorious with a score of 22.1. Second place went to Andy Smith with 21.0.

In the second competition, shooters were invited to bring their own open sighted rifles to compete with.

Again they were allowed five shots but this time had to accrue a qualifying score of 22.0 to get into the final shoot-off.

The qualifying score however seemed unobtainable for all shooters as the highest score of 20.0 was shared by Trevor Morris, Fred Williams and Rachael Brookes. Therefore the winner was decided by a shoot-off between these three shooters with Morris emerging triumphant after shooting 21.1. Brookes was second with 20.1.

Meanwhile, in the last round of league fixtures before Christmas Binton A defeated Binton B 217-213.

Binton B took an early lead with an impressive 33 from Bill Fleming to which Jon Packard and Chris Green added 31, the latters being a season’s best.

John Parrott and Chris Reed shot steady scores of 31 for the home team and Andy Smith managed just 30. Michelle Dale hit two 4s followed by five 5s to level the scores with a superb 33.

Brothers Joe and Sam Powell shot scores of 29 for the away team and Gordon O’nions shot 24. Following two solid scores of 30 from Neil Bragg and Alan Dyer, Binton A took the lead before Neil Beningfield chipped in with 32.

Ben Chamberlain and Roy Clarke were last on for the visitors getting scores of 31 and 29 respectively but it was not enough to surpass the A team.

Over at Wilmcote Social Club, the hosts defeated Home Guard 219-199.

First on for Wilmcote was Paul Clingan who was unfortunate to not pick up his third league possible this season after missing the bull on his seventh shot.

His score of 34 combined with a season best score of 30 for Lyn Brookes left Wilmcote with a strong lead.

Home Guard started with Richard Mills who scored 28 followed by 29 for Jackie Mills.

Joshua Bridge was up next and could only manage 25 while Haydn Taplin did slightly better with 27.

Wilmcote’s lead was extended further with scores of 31 for Brian Adshead, Andrea Norris and Alan Brookes. John Maycock and Paul Boazman shot good 30s while Tim Stephens shot an impressive 32 to bring Wilmcote’s total to 219 after scratching the lowest score.

Irene Parsons 26, Bill Gately 30, Sam Goodman 31 andDerek Powers 28 completed the Home Guard haul.

The Webley Shield begins with matches on January 5 when Binton B meet Home Guard, Clifford WMC meet Avenue-RBL and Binton A visit MEB.
