Calefax Reed Quintet on the road to Warwick

THE CALEFAX Reed Quintet from Holland bring Leamington Music’s sixth winter season of concerts to a climax at Warwick’s Bridge House Theatre on Sunday (March 18).

Oliver Boekhoorn on oboe, Ivar Berix on clarinet, Raaf Hekkema on saxophone, Jelte Althuis on bass clarinet and Alban Wesly on bassoon have been delighting audiences round the world for 25 years, but only made their UK debut in 2009. This was broadcast by Radio 3 and the group has been in popular demand ever since.

There will be a Family Concert at 11.30am, specifically devised for seven to 11 year-olds, who can enjoy the slide-saxophone, which was invented by the group to demonstrate how sound is made.

The afternoon concert at 3pm, preceded by a talk from the group at 2.10pm, consists of arrangements made by members of Calefax - Toccatas by the early seventeenth century Italian composer Rossi, Debussy’s evocative Estampes, three of Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues and Bach’s masterpiece The Goldberg Variations.
