Stratford Town 0 Dunkirk 2

TWO late goals sentenced Town to a disappointing Baker Joiner Midland Alliance defeat at the DCS Stadium on Saturday.

The home side had only themselves to blame for not extending their three match winning run as they spurned a glut of chances and Dunkirk took full advantage to complete the double over Morton Titterton’s outfit.

Town almost got off to a good start as Michael Hayden had an effort smartly saved by James Mountain before thumping a close range shot against the bar.

It was all one-way traffic in the early stages with James Travis seeing a well struck shot saved by Mountain who was then grateful to watch a header from Andy Gregory fly just wide of his post.

It took Dunkirk 20 minutes to fashion their first opening through Tony Law whose low drive was well saved by Town keeper Richard Morris.

Town continued to look the more likely and in the 25th minute a deep cross from Dan Parker found Stuart Herlihy but his header looped over the bar.

The home side should have broken the deadlock just before the break when Mykel Beckley headed inches wide following an inviting cross from Cameron Jones.

Dunkirk were first to threaten after the interval through Kelvin Mushambi whose long range effort was just off target.

Town must have sensed it was not to be their day when Hayden did well down the left before firing over a cross from which his colleagues were unable to apply the finishing touch. 

Hayden unleashed a powerful shot which flew inches wide on the hour, while substitute Dan Kerrigan, with his first contribution, neatly combined with Jones before firing just over the bar.

Ricky Baker and Travis were both unlucky with long range efforts before the latter was denied by a point blank save from Mountain and Hayden’s far post header from another Jones cross flew wide.

Town survived a scare 15 minutes from time when Craig Meakin’s cross reached Law who somehow failed to force the ball home from virtually on the line.

But Dunkirk did break the deadlock nine minutes from time when Law atoned for his glaring miss by neatly setting up substitute Ben Clark who clinically finished from 18 yards.

The visitors wrapped up the points six minutes later when Tony Atkins was on hand to head home a cross from fellow substitute Will Coutts.

Town, who remain tenth in the table, visit table-toppers Westfields this Saturday.
