SHAKESPEARE'S old school is preparing to make history by opening the classroom doors to girls.

In September 2013 girls will be admitted to King Edward VI School's Sixth Form for the first time in its 460 year existence. Up to one third of the 200-strong Sixth Form will be made up of female students,

Headmaster Bennet Carr said: “Research shows that male and female students tend to bring different learning styles, approaches and perspectives to their A level studies and that both genders benefit from seeing how each other work. "

Girls and boys wishing to apply for the Sixth Form are invited to attend the school’s Sixth Form Opening Evening on Tuesday November 13, starting at 6.15pm.

It will provide an opportunity for all interested in joining the school after GCSEs to meet staff and current students, and to find out what life in the Sixth Form at KES has to offer.

Mr Carr added: "KES is able to offer some subjects that are not currently available or considered viable in other schools and we also have outstanding specialist facilities for preparing students for the top universities.

"The school is widely regarded as a centre of excellence for sport, music and drama and this change to our admissions policy will allow girls to benefit from these opportunities too.”
