THE BIG time is beckoning for singer-songwriter Lucy Rose.

The 23-year-old has experienced a whirlwind year which started with the recording at her Rowington home of her recently-released debut album Like I Used To.

But Lucy has not always been keen on the limelight. Her musical talent was there from a young age, but the willpower to perform on stage was not, and it was only when she moved to London to study a Geography degree at UCL that things changed.

After meeting musically-minded friends - and finding the ability to sing in front of complete strangers - the course was ditched in favour of following her heart and a career in music.

"I never thought I'd be good enough - I still don't," she told The Observer.

"I never liked the idea of playing to family or friends. I get by because I'm playing in front of strangers.

"It's still difficult to get people's opinions and you have to have a thick skin and get tough. I don't read anything about me."

But despite her own doubts about her ability, Lucy's debut album has been greeted with widespread acclaim, including a feature review in the Daily Telegraph.

Recording an album at home is not standard practice.

Lucy explained: "I loved growing up in Rowington so it was a real honour to record the album back home.

"I had no funding so it was decision of do we pay for the studio or come back home to do it.

"It was the opposite of a home studio, we took mics and a computer into the family room.

"My dad is mr optimistic whereas my mum is more of a realist and was wondering how it was going to work.

"The main problem was the TV was in that room so we had to make sure we got a TV into another room for them!

"It was a real unique way of recording."

Lucy, who namechecks greats such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell as influences, also contributed some backing vocal duties on Bombay Bicycle Club's album A Different Kind of Fix.
