On the Threshold of success

Thursday 03 January 2013 Updated: 09/01 19:02

FOURTEEN Stratford AC runners enjoyed their the third race in the Threshold Events 10km Winter Series which was their final outing of 2012.

The route around the village of Ilmington featured some flat sections but much of the course is either steeply uphill or downhill.

Dan Lynch (6th, 41.08) led the Stratford contingent home adding to 5th and 3rd place finishes in the opening two races, while Eloise Du Luart (8th, 41.20) was the first laytd to finish.

A lack of training over Christmas meant Michael Warner (14th, 42.28) did not have the race fitness he would have appreciated on the unforgiving terrain. He was followed by Jamie Chorley (17th, 42.58) who continued his training for the 2013 London Marathon and was quicker than race one.

Kate Wright (18th, 43.04) was next home ahead of Edward Tolhurst (39th, 48.19) who made his debut in a Stratford-upon-Avon AC vest and enjoyed the stern test.

Paul Hawkins (40th, 48.42) started confidently but struggled to maintain his pace, while Mark Newman (46th, 50.02) tackled the early stages with gusto but paid the price in the final 2km.

Paul Green (48th, 50.26) stuck to his task well and finished just ahead of David Jones (50th, 50.45) who won the M60 age group prize.

They were followed by Debbie Cooper (61st, 52.15) and Vanessa Crookes (81st, 55.25) who took seven minutes off the last time she ran this race in February 2012.

Maureen Birch (83rd, 55.48) ran with her daughter Alicia and was ecstatic to receive the prize for the FV55 category.

Maureen’s impressive positions so far are 67th, 61th and 83rd and she will be confident of solid performances in the two races which remain.

Rebecca Brown (115th, 67.27) and Andy Brown (116th, 67.27) negotiated the course together providing much-needed support on the way round.

The race winner was Paul Andrew of Kenilworth Runners in 36.31. Paul sits at the top of the Winter Series table having won two races and finished 2nd in the other.

It was a lovely sunny morning for the Coventry Godiva Harriers ‘New Year 5’ race at the University of Warwick.

The first Stratford athlete to finish was Eoin Price (65th, 33.56), while Roger Wilson (78th. 36.04) picked up the first O70 prize, a couple of minutes ahead of an underperforming John Turner (96th, 38.30) and an even-paced Andy Turner (97th, 38.51).

Ruth Calderbank (42.15) ran an excellent race but did not receive a position due to her race number being incorrectly recorded as she crossed the finished line.

The overall winner was Kevin Seaward of Cardiff AC in 25.02. The first lady was Jodie Stimpson (unattached) in 27.58. Jodie won the ITU Triathlon World Cup in September.

This race was probably unique in having three Olympians - Dave Moorcroft, Colin Kirkham and Bill Adcocks - helping out by doing a spot of marshaling.

Meanwhile, there is still time to enter the Simply Run ‘Not the Roman IX’ race which is organised by Stratford-upon-Avon AC and takes place at 11am on Sunday, 20th January 20.

The race headquarters will be FISSC on Knights Lane in Tiddington and the 7.5 mile route includes sections along Banbury Road, Goldicote Road and Loxley Road.

Entries can be made through or a postal entry form can be printed off if preferred. The entry fees are £13 (affiliated runners) and £15 (unaffiliated).
