VLADIMIR Mayakovsky - poet, political artist, playwright and leading figure in the Russian Futurist Movement is brought to life at the RST in Stratford in the new year.
Salida Productions and the Mercury Theatre present their critically-acclaimed drama Mayakovsky: The Slanting Rain plays in the Ferguson Room at the RST from January 15 to 19.
Born a forester’s son in Tsarist Russia, Mayakovsky became a leading figure in the Bolshevik led revolution and an opponent of the bureaucracy until his suicide in 1930.
Eccentric, unpredictable, with a keen sense of the ridiculous, Mayakovsky was a master showman performing in factories and halls across Russia, commanding audiences of thousands in an epoch of wars and revolutions.
Ed Hughes - whose other credits include the RSC’s The Canterbury Tales - is Mayakovsky in the one man play.
Mayakovsky: The Slanting Rain runs alongside Michael Boyd’s RSC production of Boris Godunov. Based on the play by the great Russian writer, Alexander Pushkin, this new adaptation by Adrian Mitchell runs in repertoire in the Swan Theatre until March 30.
