PLANNING officers have recommended controversial plans to build a supermarket on the outskirts of Shipston are refused.

Members of Stratford District Council's planning committee (east) are set to consider an application from Ainscough Strategic to build on land off Campden Road on the edge of town. Aside from a supermarket, the application also includes 54 new homes, a retirement care home, and a community centre.

The issue has divided opinion in Shipston.

A major factor in the recommendation for refusal, given in the report to the committee, is the possible impact a supermarket would have on existing traders in the town centre, something the anti-supermarket campaign group Shipston Heart Alive (SHAC) has voiced.

But rival group Shipston Needs a Supermarket (SNAS) have argued residents should not have to travel miles to do their weekly shop.

The meeting is at Shipston High School, starting at 6pm.

* The debate over whether Shipston should have a supermarket has been immortalised – in Lego.

Rob O'Malley, who is in favour of building a supermarket on the outskirts of the town, uploaded the video on Youtube this week.

He created the video, designed to highlight the problems and difficulties of parking and shopping in Shipston, by editing and adding subtitles to an American lego stop motion animation.
