Badminton
Golden performances

Thursday 14 February 2013 Updated: 14/02 16:09

IT PROVED a highly successful day for local badminton club Alveston Juniors as their young players picked up ten medalsm including four golds, in the Warwickshire Restricted Singles event at Warwick on Saturday.

The highlight came in the under 12 boys age category in which all four semi-finalists were from Alveston who secured their places following success in the group stages.

Delighted coach Chris Osbourne said: “About three years ago we were proud to take all three medals in this age category, but 2013 has started off with us going one better.

“It was a very proud moment for me - though tinged with the sadness of knowing that only one could win the gold which left three club mates disappointed.”

As it was, Ben Fisher triumphed over Joe Herbert in the final to add to the impressive medal haul which began with Faith Christopherson taking gold in the girls under 10 category.

That was quickly followed by Louis Kendrick who battled through the under 10 boys group to clinch silver.

Whilst the under 12 boys were sweeping the board, it was tougher in the girls section in which, after a series of games that included two narrow defeats, Lucy Jennings had to be content with bronze.

As the day continued through the older age groups, the medal count increased.

Carl Fordham powered his way past a large entry, including a number of Alveston team mates, to win the under 14 boys event and club newcomer Emma Kensett was delighted to win silver in the girls under 16 category.

As a day of frenetic badminton activity drew to a close, there was one last medal to be won and Jake Brettel took gold by the narrowest of margins in the boys under 16 section.

Any local youngsters who want join one of the four weekly sessions to learn a new sport, or think they can help Alveston to even more medals next time should contact the club on AlvestonJuniors@aol.com or ring Chris Osborne on (01789) 842664.
