COUNCIL chiefs hope plans for a new footbridge will reassure people over the long-term future of Stratford train station.

People are being urged to have their say on the best design for a £1.26 million bridge giving better access to platforms for passengers.

Warwickshire County Council is proposing to build a new bridge with lifts to make it easier for people with mobility problems, parents with buggies, and passengers with luggage to reach platforms. The existing footbridge only has steps and cannot be altered to accept lifts, but it will remain in place as it is considered an historic structure.

And the council hope the planned new bridge will end speculation over the future of the station with completion of the new £8.8 million Stratford Parkway train station at Bishopton - next to the current park and ride - set for May.

The new bridge and lifts are scheduled for completion in spring 2014 and the council is currently in the early stages of bridge design.

The public exhibition, running from Monday (February 11) to February 18 at the town station, will allow people to express their views at the start of the design process.

Coun Peter Butlin, county transport spokesman, said: “We really would welcome the views of local residents and other people who use the town station, particularly thoughts on the style of the bridge that will be built, so I would encourage people to come and view the public exhibition.

“The new footbridge is part of our plans to provide better access for all at the town station and will be part-funded by the Department for Transport’s Access for All fund.”

For those unable to attend the exhibition, further details can also be found by visiting www.warwickshire.gov.uk/stratfordtownstation, which also includes an online feedback form.

Posters will also be displayed at Stratford Library and the Stratford District Council offices.
