Armonico Consort perform Handal's Messiah at Warwick Arts Centre

Stratford Editorial 1st Dec, 2014 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016

HANDAL’S Messiah is performed by Armonico Consort and a few friends at Warwick Arts Centre on Sunday December 14.

The Warwick-based choir and orchestra will be joined by a quartet of world class soloists, including soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, countertenor Michael Chance, tenor Nathan Vale, and bass Andrew Davies.

Handel’s Messiah is one of the most celebrated pieces of classical music ever composed. The lyrical melodies, rousing choruses, and graceful arias depict the life of Christ in a vivid and vibrant musical portrait.

Armonico Consort Artistic Director Christopher Monks said: “It’s a great privilege for Armonico Consort to return to Warwick Arts Centre, and we’re thrilled to be bringing the marvellous music of Handel’s Messiah with us.

“Handel was so struck by the powerful message of Christ’s journey that he wrote Messiah in just 24 days! He composed obsessively, dedicating himself entirely to this beautiful score, and it certainly paid off.

“The result of less than one month’s work still resonates with us today, as it has done since the music’s first performance in 1741.”

Armonico Consort’s mix of soloists, choral singing, and period instruments offer the chance to hear the Messiah performed almost as Handel and his audiences would have heard it.

Messiah is the latest concert in Warwick Arts Centre’s Concert Series which continues in the New Year with the Royal Northern Sinfonia on Saturday January 24.

Young Anglo-Russian violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky joins the Saint Petersburg Symphony Orchestra for Tchaikovsky’s lyrical Violin Concerto on Wednesday February 18, while the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra all visit in May.
