All the fun of the fair at Stratford Mop

THE MOP offered all the fun of the fair from yesteryear to today.

The historic 127 year-old Golden Carousel, located on Rother Street, offered a flashback to a bygone era, while Tornado on Bridge Street, and Mission Space by the American Fountain, were very much of the 21st century.

The rain on the Friday was far from ideal fair weather, but it picked up the following day in time for the official opening on Saturday Stratford District Council chair Christopher Kettle, and the traditional Pig Roast charity auction.

The original charter for Stratford Mop fair was granted by Edward VI in 1544. The event has its origins in the hiring of agricultural and domestic labour, when potential labourers would attend with a mop to signal their skills.

In the 1950s, during the heyday of rail travel, special trains were laid on to ferry people from surrounding towns and villages to and from the fair.
