BAKERS are being urged to get the oven on in aid of The Shakespeare Hospice.

The Shottery-based hospice will be be hosting a Bake-Off competition at the Stratford Town Centre Food Festival on Saturday September 21.

Helen Furniss, manager of the hospice’s charity shop on Greenhill Street, will be on the special Bake-Off stall opposite Shakespeare’s Birthplace on the day.

The event will include a cupcake competition for under-16s and a special Stratford upon Avon themed celebration cake competition for those aged 16 and over.

Helen said: “Anyone can come and take part in our Bake-Off and drop off their entry between 10am and noon on the day.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to be part of such a popular free event for locals and visitors to Stratford, thanks to Stratforward BID.

“As well as the cakes, we will have other items from our shop for sale including clothing, gifts and home accessories. Come along and support us.”

Judging will be at 1pm, with prizes for the first, second and third category winners provided by local businesses including a cream tea for two at the Mercure Stratford upon Avon Shakespeare Hotel, a family ticket to the MAD Museum, a family ticket to Magic Alley and a family season ticket for Stratford Butterfly Farm.

The cakes will be sold for donations afterwards to help fund our vital services here at the Shakespeare Hospice.

In addition to watching the races from the riverside, which start near the boat club at the Tramway Bridge at 10am, visitors can come along to the race camp at Stratford Recreation Ground, where they can find out about The Shakespeare Hospice, check the race timetable and buy refreshments.

Michael Wigmore, from sponsors Western Power Distribution said: “We have local staff competing in two boats and we are looking forward to the ‘battles’ throughout the day with local organisations and teams.

“It is always a fantastic spectator event so we hope that many local people and visitors to the town will come along and give us a cheer.”
