Bikers could be legally allowed to park on Waterside

MOTORBIKES could legally be allowed to park on Waterside if historic by-laws are scrapped.

Stratford District Council looks set to update the by-law, which prohibits parking along Waterside and Bancroft Gardens, to allow motorbike gatherings which occur regularly throughout summer.

A sign prohibiting parking was removed earlier this year after officials agreed it was ineffective.

But whether to reinforce the law was discussed at a recent cabinet meeting following safety concerns raised by former mayor Cyril Bennis.

Mr Bennis has been campaigning for enforcement for some five years and has been met with strong opposition from riders who argue visitors enjoy seeing the bikes and that the biking community brings a lot of business to the town.

Property spokeswoman Coun Lynda Organ said it was clear the by-laws were historic and needed updating. She confirmed a report would be produced to recommend the motorbike gatherings be allowed.
