A BY-ELECTION will be held next month to fill the Welford district councillor role formerly held by the late Peter Barnes.

The candidates are Neal Appleton (Independent), Richard Cox (Conservative), Anthony Kent (Labour), Manuela Perteghella (Liberal Democrat) and John Stott (Green Party).

The by-election will take place on Thursday March 12 with polling stations open from 7am to 10pm, at Jubilee Hall in Clifford Chambers, Welford and Weston Memorial Hall, Long Marston Village Hall in Meon Vale and at Luddington Village Hall.

The role will form one of 36 seats at the district council which currently comprises 19 Conservatives, 11 Liberal Democrats, four Independent and one Green.

Coun Barnes, the authority’s longest serving councillor, died suddenly in January after reportedly suffering a heart attack.

Coun Barnes served for 30 years, first as a Liberal Democrat and then as an Independent councillor.
