Carer travels to Romania to help disabled orphans

Stratford Editorial 27th Oct, 2016 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016

A KIND-HEARTED carer from Bidford travelled to Romania to help orphans with learning disabilities.

Feilicity Onens was part of a team supporting some of the country’s most vulnerable children and offering training to charity Crosscause which supports them.

The charity is based in the town of Nicoresti in Eastern Romania and their 11-strong team supports 16 young adults with learning disabilities, who all grew up in state orphanages.

And 29-year-old Felicity– who works locally for learning disability charity Hft – offered advice to the carers by showing them how to communicate with people who cannot speak and how to handle those who are unable to move.

Felicity told the Observer: “The staff at Crosscause are incredibly dedicated, but they have very little access to training. We shared what we’ve learnt about supporting people with learning disabilities to live the best life possible.

“It’s important the individual has a say in how they live their life – whether it’s about the food they eat, the place they live, or what they do with their time.”

Felicity says the most heart-warming part of her week volunteering was how grateful those she helped were.

She said: “There were so many memorable moments but the community spirit really stood out and how generous people are.

“I had read about the conditions people with a learning disability had been subject to in the past and to see people happy and grateful for the small things we take for granted was very special.

“The trip was fantastic and it was also great to help the charity by handing out food, clothes and essentials to Romanian families.”
