Cycling club hopes international race will encourage residents to jump in the saddle

STRATFORD Cycling Club is hoping Tour de France winners Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome will encourage residents to jump in the saddle.

The two Team Skyriders – this year’s tour winner Thomas and four time yellow jersey winner Froome – will be among competitors in the Ovo Energy Tour of Britain 2018 which hits the roads of Warwickshire on September 5.

The county plays host to the fourth stage of the tour, which will feature 13 of the 17 Tour de France teams, and which is expected to attract fans in their thousands along the 183km route.

It follows the Women’s Ovo Tour which Warwickshire hosted a stage of for the third successive year in June.

The stage begins in Nuneaton and finishes at Newbold Terrace in Leamington, and will include a stretch overlooking Shakespeare’s hometown.

The Stratford club has been asked to help marshal at the event and ensure its smooth running.

Club secretary Paul Freeman said: “We’re obviously thrilled that the Ovo Energy Tour of Britain will be coming to Warwickshire this year. It always draws a huge crowd wherever it goes, and I’m sure the locals here will exceed the usual numbers.

“The tour is going to provide a lot young cycling fans the opportunity to be inspired by professionals at the top of their game. Whether they’re getting hooked for the first time or seeing their heroes in action, it will no doubt have a huge impact locally.

“We’ve seen increased participation across all age-groups at our club and at locally held sportives over the last few years and there has been a steady increase in the number of children.

“With all the buzz surrounding the tour, we welcome any new members to the club who get involved as a result.”

The group runs training sessions, regular races and social rides for cyclists of all abilities.
