CYCLISTS are virtually getting on their bikes for a Bard-inspired tour in aid of The Shakespeare Hospice.
The hospice created The Great Shakespeare Virtual Cycle to replace its annual cycling sportive which had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.
Among the teams taking part is ‘Shakespeare’s Virtual Wheelers’ which is aiming to pedal the maximum 6,875 miles route – the equivalent of which in pound sterling would help cover the costs of providing the Day Hospice service for a week.
The 18-strong team – ranging in age from seven to 78 – will cycle as a virtual team riding individually or within family groups. Each team member contributes as and when they go out for a cycle and logs their miles on their return.
To provide incentives and targets, the team has created a route taking riders on a virtual journey from the UK to many of the countries Shakespeare’s plays were set.
Beginning at the Shottery-based hospice, the ride takes in Scotland, Denmark, Italy and Egypt among other destinations.
