CONTROVERSIAL plans to demolish Stratford’s B&Q store should be re-thought.
Coun Peter Barnes is concerned people are going to be left no choice but to travel miles for their DIY needs when the Maybird Centre store goes.
Stratford District Council’s West planning committee last month approved an application by Maybird Centre owners The Capital Hill Partnership to demolish B&Q and replace it with three retail units by a vote of six to one by councillors.
Coun Barnes was the only member of the committee to vote against the proposal.
Coun Barnes said a number of townspeople had contacted him with their concerns and an alternative needed to be looked into.
He told The Observer: “There’s a need and if it goes, then there will be nothing like it.
“Ninety-eight per cent of people that go to B&Q do so by car to get heavy materials like cement and the nearest B&Q stores will be Evesham and Sollihull.
“I feel it is appropriate to ask the council to find something.”
B&Q has said it was disappointed with the decision.
