THE POLICE’S latest eye in the sky recruits are ready for action.

Warwickshire and West Midlands Police’s trial of new crime-fighting drones started this week.

The remote-controlled helicopter-like devices are equipped with high-definition cameras controlled by officers on the ground.

They will be allow officers to get a clear view from above in less accessible areas, and to monitor locations too difficult or dangerous for officers to go.

The drones, about the size of a dustbin lid and with a top speed of around 25mph, can also help monitor large public gatherings and demonstrations.

The trial is expected to last for six months.
