Fire chiefs call for help to tackle arson

ARSON is behind nearly half of all fire call-outs in Warwickshire.

The shocking revelation has prompted a call from from fire chiefs in Warwickshire on everyone to play their part in tackling fire crime following nearly 150 reported arson cases in Stratford district over the past three years.

Moreno Francioso Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service’s arson reduction manager, said: “We know that more needs to be done.

“This is why we work closely with key partners including the police, local authorities and communities to ensure that arson remains low in the county.

“Incidents of arson can have a significant drain on our resources and can put lives in danger, destroy buildings and be devastating.

It is also a crime, so if you see anyone setting a fire deliberately, then ‘don’t accept it, report it!’.

“Equally, if you see anyone fly tipping or see an abandoned vehicle that could become a potential target, then report it and help us to keep your community safe!”

The Warwickshire brigade has teamed-up with the Arson Prevention Forum.

Forum chair Lee Howell told The Observer: “Arson accounts for almost half of all fires attended by the fire and rescue services and can have devastating effects in terms of its cost and consequences

“The Forum brings together those with a responsibility or interest in reducing arson and challenges them to do more. We have seen progress, but there is still work to be done. This is where members of the public can help.”

Insurers report arson costs over £1billion nationally in fire-related claims each year.

Damage to property and interruption to business caused by arson is significant.

Arson also kills. Last year 50 people died in Britain in fires started deliberately.

To report and share information contact police, the fire service arson reduction team or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
