FLORISTRY students are hoping to bloom in a national competition.

Dean Sharpe and Zoe Simmons from Moreton Morrell College will compete in the WorldSkills UK national finals at the The Skills Show in Birmingham.

The pair won their places in the finals after scoring highly in the qualifying rounds of the floristry competition. They have been training for the competition with support from fellow students and staff at the college.

Zoe who hails from Wellesbourne, said: “I originally got interested in floristry after choosing the flowers for my wedding. I signed up for a taster day and loved it immediately so I did an evening course and then progressed onto Level 3.

“I wasn’t sure I wanted to do competition work, but Jane our tutor persuaded me and it has worked out really well.”

Dean, from Stafford, works full-time as a florist in Lichfield. He added: “I have taken part in a few competitions, such as the UK Florist of the Year, so I’ve got quite a lot of experience already.

“I’m the only guy competing, which in some ways is good as I definitely stand out, but I hope that by taking part in the final at The Skills Show, I’ll maybe inspire others to think about floristry as a career too.”
