A FORMER Stratford District Council chairman has raised over £2,500 for children’s charities.
Coun George Atkinson – who handed over his chain of office in May – raised money for his chosen charity the NSPCC at the ‘Chairman’s Charity Luncheon’.
Some of the donations raised at the lunch also went towards ChildLine.
The Tanworth councillor said: “The NSPCC is a charity I have always supported. In the early 1960s I worked in Sheffield and was an active member of its Junior Chamber of Commerce and was given the opportunity to speak at one of their lunches about business theme and money management.
“Walking to the venue I saw a NSPCC shop, something in the window attracted my attention, so I went in and read some accounts of the abuse facing children. I was horrified, so changed my prepared address and promoted the NSPCC and have been supporting the charity ever since.”
NSPCC fund-raising manager Barbara Elsey said the money would help reach children in schools across Warwickshire as part of the charity’s ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ campaign.
