AN ‘OARSOME’ effort by fundraisers made the 2016 Lions Raft Race the most successful yet.

Some £14,000 has been raised for Heart of England Mencap now all the sponsorship has been counted from the annual event organised by the Wellesbourne and District and Shakespeare Lions Clubs and sponsored by Rosconn Group.

Over 50 teams paddled in their home-made crafts down 7.5 miles of the River Avon in July, all in the name of charity.

Every penny raised will support Mencap’s cycling project which aims to buy adapted bikes for people with learning disabilities, allowing them to get out, keep fit and experience the joy of cycling.

Fundraising manager for Heart of England Mencap, Cath Errington said: “Our fleet of adapted bikes is already growing thanks to the Raft Race, we now have trikes as well as a hand cycle, with plans to purchase a side-by-side bike next, as well as bikes for the families of our customers to use as well, so they can cycle together.

“We owe a huge thanks to the Lions and to everyone who took on the Raft Race for us.”

Kelvin McIntosh, race committee chairman for the Lions, added: “Our 40th anniversary event was a real milestone year for us and we are so pleased to have raised so much, the highest total for many years, to support Mencap’s cycling project.

The 41st Lions Raft Race takes place on Sunday July 23 with the Riding for the Disabled Association this year’s main beneficiary.
