Guide dogs need somewhere to put their paws up

Stratford Editorial 7th Oct, 2017   0

GUIDE Dog mums are looking for loving fur-ever homes where they can put their paws up.

The charity needs homes for dogs – usually a golden retriever, labrador or German shepherd – who breed the next generation of life-changing pups.

The guide dog mums live as pets and also give birth to their litters in the home. The puppies spend their first six weeks there before going to the centre for training.

Owners have access to 24 hour support and advice from staff at the Leamington-based National Breeding Centre.

Volunteer Lesley Reddy currently cares for golden retriever Annie, who will soon be retiring after having five litters of puppies.

Lesley said: “I grew up with dogs and as a child wanted to breed dogs, so this role was like a dream come true.

“It is so rewarding to hear that puppies are doing well once they have left and even more so when you hear they’ve qualified. I’ve been fortunate enough to speak to several guide dog owners who are working with Annie’s puppies and it’s amazing the difference these dogs make to people’s lives.”

Those wanting to care for one of the breeding dogs must live within an hour’s drive of Leamington.
