London Eye-style wheel for Stratford gets green light

A LONDON Eye-style wheel in Stratford’s has been given the green light by council chiefs.

Stratford District Council has been approached by three operators keen to run an observation wheel during the spring and summer.

And members of the Cabinet have in principle agreed to a six month trial from next spring.

The operators all want a site close to the river and the theatre and, subject to weight limits, council officers say it would be possible to site a wheel on part of the Recreation Ground car park next to the View Restaurant.

A report to council chiefs said: “This proposal represents an opportunity to bring a new attraction to Stratford. The wheel would provide an additional visitor attraction and may attract additional visitors to the town.

“There is no residential property in close proximity to the site that would be disturbed or overlooked by a wheel.”

Talks have already taken place with wards councillors, Stratforward and The View – and response has been “generally supportive”.

The successful operator would likely have to pay a £10,000 deposit against any potential damage to the car park with the prospective wheel taking up some 25 current parking spaces.

The wheel would be nothing like the size of the London Eye which stands 135 metres tall.

It is more likely to be nearer 50 metres – similar in size to those in Brighton and at the Birmingham Christmas market.
