A MAN who was killed as a result of a two car head on crash between Claverdon and Henley has been named as Mark Smith.

The smash happened on the canal bridge on the A4189 road close to the Crab Mill pub near Preston Bagot just after 7pm on Monday (October 19).

Police say a Mercedes C220 Estate travelling towards Claverdon and a Volvo S40 travelling in the opposite direction were involved in a head-on collision.

Both cars suffered ‘very significant’ front end damage and a third car – a Kia Piccanto – is understood to have then crashed into the Volvo, which was being driven by Mr Smith.

Emergency services arrived shortly afterwards but nothing could be done to save the 36-year-old from Studley, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the the Mercedes – a 78 year-old man – was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with leg injuries and possible fractures to his shoulder, wrist and ankle on the left side.

The driver and passenger in the Kia – a man and woman in their 50s – were checked over by ambulance crews but were uninjured.

Police are keen to speak to people who witnessed the crash or anyone who saw either vehicle prior to the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101.
