Mass unwrap in Stratford aims to highlight plastic pollution

Stratford Editorial 27th Sep, 2019   0

PLASTIC boycotters have organised a ‘mass unwrap’ event in Stratford.

Campaign group Stratford Climate Action has organised a mass plastic unwrap at Tesco in Birmingham Road from 2pm to 4pm, on Sunday (September 29).

The event – part of a new campaign ‘Take the Plastic Back’ – aims to highlight the right customers have to hand back unwanted packaging to supermarkets, and the contribution of plastic to climate change.

Tesco has agreed to provide a bin for the plastic and other unwanted packaging. A stall will also be set up in the entrance to encourage shoppers to unwrap their items too.

Organisers also hope the store will provide permanent recycling bins near tills to allow people to continue to recycle plastic packaging.

The group plans to organise similar future events in other local supermarkets.

As well as the impact to the environment, oceans and human health, the plastic industry is contributing to climate change. Plastic is among the most greenhouse gas intensive industries, and the fastest growing.
