People needed to break Guinness World Record

Stratford Editorial 9th Nov, 2016   0

QUIZZERS and sports fans are being encouraged to join in with a world record attempt.

Some 600 people are needed to join the ultimate sports quiz to raise money for charity and set the record.

Derek Reynolds, who is also known as Des, and his partner Liz, lost their daughter Ruby just a few hours after she was born prematurely in 2010.

The couple have welcomed four year-old son Jack since, but 44 year-old Des has continued to channel his energy into fundraising to help families who have suffered a similar loss. The quiz, being held at Warwick School on January 28, will raise cash for Myton Hospice, and Jack’s Rainbow, which works to help bereaved families create new memories after the death of a child.

Jack’s Rainbow founder Lucy Herd lost her son Jack a day after Ruby died. Her current goal is to raise £25,000 to buy a caravan in Cornwall offering families a place to spend time after losing a child.

Des, who works as a planning manager for PNJ Engineering in Alcester, told The Observer: “I’ve been a part of a couple of charity golf days and held a Tenpin Bowling Challenge but you can’t keep asking the same people to sponsor you.

“I had the idea to go for a world record by playing as many sports as possible in one day but Guinness weren’t on board with the idea. I then realised there was an opportunity to hold the biggest sports quiz and no one has yet successfully set the record.”

The Stratford resident has already managed to secure video questions from some well known sporting celebrities including A Question of Sport team captain Phil Tufnell, and has had a message of support from Paralympic gold medalist Megan Giglia.

He added: “I am really overwhelmed by the support shown from local businesses, with sponsors in place already for every quiz round.

“We already have prizes on offer from Cox’s Yard in Stratford and the Hilton Warwick but are still keen to receive additional sponsorship in the way of prizes for quiz rounds, plus raffle and auction prizes, so anybody who can offer anything please get in touch.”

Teams of up to six people can enter the quiz. Entry is £60 per team.
