PICTURE SPECIAL: Battle of the titans at Stratford Boat Club regatta

A BATTLE of the titans took place down on the river in Stratford.

Stratford Boat Club regatta saw local crews as well as those from further afield taking part including Kings School Worcester, Evesham Rowing Club, King Edward VI Boat Club, Cheltenham Ladies College Boat Club and Magdalen College School Boat Club.

The regatta has been taking place in Stratford since 1879. Racing is on the town stretch of the river from Holy Trinity Church to the club grounds by The Tramway Bridge.

And as well as the rowing contingent, the regatta attracts a lot of interest from visitors to the town who come down to the Bancroft Gardens and the Recreation Ground to enjoy the racing.

The regatta this year had three divisions and 162 separate races running all day on Saturday June 21 from 8.30am until 5.45pm.

Regatta secretary and chairman Dawson Curnock said: “It was a long day’s racing – our tea tent was extremely busy dispensing dozens of cakes and snacks. What a magnificent day topped by great racing. We ran the regatta under very tight safety protocols. We were especially grateful for the help and tolerance of those operators who work and make their living on the river.”

Steve Wellstead, Stratford Boat Club’s junior coordinator, added: “We were blessed with good weather for the regatta, there were crowds watching the racing adding much to Stratford’s atmosphere and vitality. We were glad to showcase our sport and demonstrate our part in the success of our town.”
