Refugees need our help say Stratford group

REFUGEE children who have lost their families need more support from the Government – so say Stratford Churches Together.

The group, which represents 13 churches in the district, has written to MP Nadhim Zahawi in support of Government plans to offer sanctuary to refugees. The group has backed for the Government’s programme to resettle refugees from Syria in Britain, which is set to see two Syrian families arriving in Stratford in November.

But they are concerned about the plight of unaccompanied children and young people, and are calling on the Government to act swiftly to help vulnerable young refugees to find help and homes in this country.

Group spokeswoman Sarah Gretton said: “We know that Mr Zahawi, as a former refugee himself, shares our urge to do as much as possible for people who have been forced to flee their homes and their country.”

“We echo the call in the faith leaders’ letter: our faith teaches us to alleviate suffering and share with those in need. We hope Mr Zahawi will urge the Government to do more.”
