Revamped gym facilities to be unveiled at free fitness fun day

Stratford Editorial 23rd Aug, 2016 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

A SUMMER of sport is set to continue this weekend with a day of free fitness fun.

Everyone Active has spent more than £250,000 refurbishing the fitness suites at its leisure centres in Stratford and Shipston.

And on Saturday (August 27) people of all ages and abilities will be able to try the new facilities as part of the ‘I Am Team GB’ open day.

The gyms at both sites will be open to the public from 9am to 5pm with Everyone Active running gym-floor workshops and fitness challenges.

Virtual group exercise classes will take place at Stratford while local sports clubs will host bookable taster sessions including karate, dance classes, pickleball, and badminton. The swimming pool will also be open for free ‘Wet and Wild’ inflatable sessions.

I Am Team GB is a nationwide initiative led by The National Lottery and ITV, which aims to welcome home Britain’s Olympic heroes by encouraging people across the UK to join in with a day of free sporting activities.

And for every activity visitors to Stratford and Shipston take part in, they will be entered into a draw to win prizes including an Apple Watch and free memberships.

It is the first time the fitness suite at Stratford has undergone an extensive refurbishment since 2010 and follows the £5million revamp of the leisure centre, which was completed last year.

As part of the refurbishment, Everyone Active has installed more than 40 top-of-the-range cardiovascular machines offering internet access alongside a number of machines designed specifically to ensure accessibility for disabled users.

New apparatus has also been installed at the gym in Shipston including a squat rack, weights, a chest and shoulder press, and updated cardiovascular machines.

Gareth Wagg, Everyone Active’s General Manager at Stratford Leisure Centre, said: “It’s really important we help our community to become more active.

“We hope this summer has inspired people to get involved in sport and by offering the opportunity to use our facilities, we want to help them find an activity they enjoy.

“We are excited to showcase the new fitness suites – it’s important customers have the best experience and this will make a huge difference to those using the facilities.”

District council community spokesman, Mike Brain, added: “Supporting the health and well-being of our residents is a key priority and these facilities will be much more in-line with what modern leisure users expect.

“The council invested £5million last year and our contractors are continuing this by carrying out improvements at Stratford and Shipston. We will continue to work alongside them to improve these facilities for all.”

The gym at Stratford Leisure Centre will be closed until Friday (August 26) to allow for the refurbishment to take place. During this time, members can use any Everyone Active centre in the surrounding area.
