Romanian student's award win paves the way for success

Stratford Editorial 18th May, 2017   0

A STUDENT from Romania has been praised following her success in her English language studies.

Alexandrina Podosu lives in Stratford and studies English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) at Stratford College.

The determined student, who aims to set up her own accountancy firm, came to the UK with her three sons in July 2016 to join her husband who had been here since January.

Less than a year later she has been awarded the International and ESOL Student of the Year award during the College Student Awards Ceremony.

Alexandrina also gained a distinction for a course in accountancy computer programmes and is studying a book keeping course at the college.

The student who had a strong grasp of written English before moving to the UK was initially frustrated at the problems she had communicating verbally.

She said: “Anne (college tutor Annew Ward) gave me confidence in myself and so much encouragement. She told me to try to have a conversation with someone in English every day. So I made sure I spoke to the other mums when waiting to pick my sons up from school. Now I have some English friends and I speak with them all the time.

“It’s something huge for me – to come here to the UK to start a new course and now I’m thrilled to receive this award.”
