AN ENVIRONMENTALLY-concious scrap metal recycler has been handed a lifetime achievement award.
Tony Bird OBE from Upper Billesley has scooped the award from the British Metals Recycling Association.
It recognised his work he has done to transform the image of scrap metal yards into a high-technology recyling sector.
Mr Bird – who is also chairman of the trustees of Stoneleigh Abbey – co-owns The Bird Group with his brothers Brian and Tom. He was previously an advisor on recycling to the UK government and the EU commission.
He said: “We are, as an industry, an enormous asset to the environment. One tonne of steel made from iron ore causes over 80 per cent more pollution in air and water than one tonne of new steel produced from our recycled ferrous scrap.”
