A SIGHT-saving surgeon has been recognised with an honorary professorship.

South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust Consultant Ophthalmologist Gary Misson has been recognised for his extensive work improving the sight of people who suffer from eye conditions.

He received the honorary professorship from Aston University in Birmingham following his work with their science department.

The professor has undertaken lots of research into the human vision and was recently awarded a European grant into a study of detecting age-related macular degeneration – a condition which causes loss of central vision.

Further research will be carried out at both Warwick Hospital and the new Stratford Hospital.

Prof Misson said: “The award is not only a personal honour, but also reflects on the status of the eye department of Warwick Hospital where patients currently receive excellent treatment.

“The team here is constantly embracing innovation and is made up of staff who are leaders in their field. Combined with the new developments at Stratford Hospital, the trust is fast becoming a centre of ophthalmic excellence to rival any in the country.”
