A SECURITY fence will be erected around a special school in Henley to stop pupils getting out.
River House School on Stratford Road – which was recently renamed Arden Fields School – cares for children with behavioural, social and emotional issues and is on the same site as Henley School.
For the past two years it has been rated inadequate by school inspectors Ofsted and placed in special measures.
One of the issues raised by inspectors was attendance, which they described as ‘very low’.
Education chiefs at Warwickshire County Council say some pupils have been leaving the premises during school hours, putting themselves and those living nearby at risk.
Now they plan to build a 2.4 metre steel security fence to keep pupils in. The current timber fence will be ripped down.
A council spokesman said: “River House School is a special school for children with behavioural, emotional and social problems.
“The school have experienced issues with pupils leaving the school premises during school hours with implications for the safety and security of both the pupils and the residents and users of adjacent premises.
“The erection of the fence would be a benefit to ensure both the safety and security of the pupils attending the two schools on the site and that of the neighbouring local residents.”
Around a third of students at the school have additional issues including attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder , oppositional defiant disorder, attachment disorder, autism and speech, language and communication difficulties.
