Stratford couple donate record number of shoeboxes to disadvantaged Romanian families

Stratford Editorial 4th Dec, 2019   0

MORE disadvantaged Romanian families than ever will have a merry Christmas thanks to kind-hearted Stratford residents.

For the last six years Malcolm and Anne McCulloch have collected and distributed shoeboxes full of gifts and essentials to help poverty-stricken families.

And the pair say this year they collected more than 400 – the highest number to date.

The shoeboxes were collected from the likes of WI groups, Bridgetown Primary School, Malcolm’s employer NFU Mutual and local supporters.

Malcolm and Anne have twice visited Romania to help distribute the boxes, and say the visits motivated them to collect more shoeboxes each year.

Malcolm told the Observer: “Many families were living in very basic conditions, it was snowing and there were six days in a row when the daytime temperature did not rise above freezing.

“We were reminded at how appreciated the gift of a shoebox is. To us in the UK these are our everyday items but to these Romanian families they are a reminder that someone cares enough to give them the only gift they will receive at Christmas.”

While it is too late to donate a box this year the couple are asking anyone who would be interested in getting involved next year to contact them.
