Stratford district bosses step up anti-litter campaign with roadshow

Stratford Editorial 6th Sep, 2021   0

AN ANTI-LITTER roadshow will be making its way around Stratford district.

The roadshow, run by Stratford District Council, will make stops in Alcester, Southam and Henley across September.

It aims to encourage people to not drop their rubbish as well as considering reusable products, to recycle and learn more about the Refill scheme, and generally help reduce single-use plastic – a major source of litter.

The roadshows will take place from 10am to 2pm at Moorfields car park in Alcester this Thursday (September 9), Wood Street car park in Southam on Thursday September 16, and outside the old Barclays Bank in Henley on the following Thursday.

The roadshows will provide advice on disposing litter and information on the time it takes for rubbish to degrade, and the detrimental impact it has on the environment. Officers will also be giving away reusable flasks and disposable ashtrays.

SDC climate change spokesman Ian Shenton said: “It is very disappointing that some people feel it is acceptable to discard litter. We want to try and change people’s attitudes and behaviour making the dropping of litter, particularly food on the go litter, totally unacceptable.

“The district council spends over £1.5million on clearing up our beautiful landscape and most of this is a totally avoidable cost. If we all do our bit and take our litter home, we will all help to keep Stratford district beautiful and protect the wildlife.

“The Refill scheme has the power to help reduce plastic pollution at source by encouraging the use of reusable water bottles, coffee cups – of which we use 2.5billion each year – bio plastics, such as hot food containers and plastic cutlery, and a reduction in packaging.”

The scheme encourages businesses to fill-up people’s water bottles for free, even if they are not a customer.

An app can be downloaded so people can find the nearest participating venue when they are out and about.

The roadshow is among efforts to curb littering which saw an increase as lockdown began to ease, including the council’s ‘Don’t be a Tosser’ campaign.
