Stratford District Council to appoint an independent person

KEEPING councillors working to the highest of standards is set to become a little easier for Stratford District Council.

The council is looking to appoint an ‘independent person’ under the Localism Act.

Whoever gets the job will help assess complaints of alleged misconduct among the council’s elected members and some of its 550 town and parish councillors.

Spokesman for democracy Phil Grafton said: “All local councils have a Code of Conduct which sets out what is expected of local councillors.

“When there is an allegation that a councillor has breached the code, the independent person will help assess if there has been a breach.

“If you are interested in helping to monitor high standards in public life, serve the local community and uphold local democracy – whether you know anything about local government or not – then we would welcome your application.”

The individual is expected to bring an impartial and informed perspective and must not be related to a council member or officer.
