Stratford manufacturer defends cots after baby death

THE DEATH of a seven-month-old baby led a coroner to voice concerns about a cot made by a Stratford company.

Coroner Penelope Schofield said baby Grace Roseman from Sussex died from asphxia after she put her head over the adjustable side of her Bednest cot and the oxygen to her brain was cut off.

She has now ordered for urgent action to be taken to prevent any future deaths.

In her report she said: “In my opinion there is a risk that future deaths will occur unless action is taken.

“Should another baby be placed in the same position and left with the side incompletely lowered again in one of these cots then another death could occur.”

The cot is available from parenting charity The National Children’s Trust, which has taken the cot off sale until the inquiry is complete.

They also say they will conduct an immediate review of the product.

The crib used by Grace was secondhand, and had been given to the family by a relative.

But Bednest – which sell the cots for around £250 from their office on Drayton Manor Drive – do not believe they are dangerous.

A statement released by the company said: “Parents can have complete faith in the safety of the cot, when used in accordance with the instructions and official guidance on safe sleeping.

“We share the coroner’s concerns about anyone who has been given a secondhand cot without instructions. However this information is available on the website and all cribs have safety stickers and a user guide with safety instructions with them when they leave the factory. It appears in this case, these were removed and not available.”

Grace’s parents have set up a donation page in their daughter’s memory, with proceeds going to Rockinghorse Children’s Charity which helps vulnerable children.

Her father Gideon said: “There are no words that can describe how we feel about the loss of our beautiful little Gracie.

“She was just starting to develop her own little personality and was always smiling. We would not wish any parent to have to go through such a devastating loss.”
