Sunflower power to hit Stratford

Stratford Editorial 16th Apr, 2016 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

SUNFLOWER power will soon be hitting Stratford.

Councillor Chris Wall is once again on the hunt for the tallest sunflower in the district and this year’s competition was officially launched at a special event at Stratford Rugby Club on Friday (April 15).

The event, which normally take place in September but was delayed after Coun Wall fell ill, saw TV gardening expert Steve Brookes present prizes to last year’s winners.

This year there will be two separate competitions – one for the tallest sunflower and another specifically for a seed grown to enter the Guinness Book of Records Tallest Sunflower.

Proceeds from the sale of sunflowers and seeds will be split between a host of charities including MezzoMums, The ABF Soldiers’ charity in support Stratford paratrooper Private Joe Whittacker who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2008 and St Andrew’s church in Shottery.

Sunflowers will be on sale at Morrisons in the town centre from the end of April or can be ordered from Coun Wall by calling 01789 508396.
