Time running out for people to have say on Stratford wheel

TIME is running out for people to have their say on plans for a London Eye-style wheel in Stratford.

Operators De Koning Leisure Group Ltd have applied to Stratford District Council for permission to site the wheel on the car park of the Recreation Ground for a six month period.

The location was chosen as it would be close to the river and theatre but the proposals have already divided opinion with some arguing a wheel would be out of keeping with Stratford, while others believe it would help attract more visitors to the town.

Company director Jan de Koning is confident the attraction would prove a success – despite fierce opposition – and claims the wheel would be a coup for Stratford.

He said: “This proposal represents an opportunity to bring a new attraction to the area.

“The wheel would provide an additional visitor attraction and attract additional visitors to the town.

“We have previously operated in Llandudno, Isle of Wight, Leicester, Leeds Festival and at Formula One, to name a few.

“It’s always a success and people love going on the wheel.”

But Stratford Boat Club among others have admitted having concerns about the wheel.

Residents and businesses have until Thursday (April 14) to make comments on the the district council’s planning website.

The plans have already been given the thumbs down by Stratford Town Council and are expected to be considered by Stratford District Council in the coming months.
