Weddings to zombie invasions - a day in the life of top Stratford photographer

WEDDINGS, newborn babies, zombie invasions – nothing is too much for Warwickshire’s ‘best’ photographer.

Kirsty Powell recently beat off stiff competition to be named the county’s best photographer in the Muddy Stilettos awards.

The 30 year-old from Stratford took up photography just six years ago as a hobby.

But after losing two members of her family in close succession, the mum-of-four decided to pursue it as a career.

Kirsty told the Observer: “After losing one of my sons to stillbirth at 38 weeks in 2009 and then losing my father the following year it hit home how important photographic memories really are. As my interest, skill and passion grew for photography I then launched Missy P Photography.”

And since launching the business she has photographed plenty of people, places and animals – but the strangest shoot she has done was of her husband who visited locations around the country dressed in a pink tutu and hot pants for charity.

She has also taken pictures of a ‘zombie invasion’ in Alcester when Pathogen Films – the film company she joint-founded – shot their latest episode of horror series Patient Zero.

And weddings are not always the norm either, with one needing the use of CGI flamethrowers.

Kirsty said: “I recently did a wedding where their description of what they wanted was ‘Carnage’. We had green screens out at the wedding, we used smoke bombs and the bride and groom were even photographed with an ambulance crew and inside the ambulance. It was a brilliant and hilarious day but most definitely not the ‘norm’ for weddings.”

And now she has thanked all of those who voted for her to be ‘Best Photographer’.

She added: “I am so grateful everyone spared their time to vote for me in the awards and I cannot thank them for giving me this opportunity. As a small freelance business this award really does mean so much to have recognition within the community.

“I was still learning and training when I started Missy P Photography and here I am today -what started as a hobby is now an award winning business.”
