POLICE are trying to get to the truth after violence flared in Stratford town centre.

They are appealing for witnesses following a clash – believed to have been racially aggravated – between two groups on Wood Street around 8.40pm on Monday June 20

The first group claim they were outside Stratford Leisure Centre in a white van, when a group in a red Mercedes attempted to drive into their van, before getting out and throwing eggs at them.

The van drove away but those inside claim they were forced to stop outside Ladbrokes when the Mercedes pulled in front of them. It is alleged the second group continued to throw eggs and made racial insults.

Those in the Mercedes claim they were driving into the leisure centre car park towards the skate park, when the van attempted to drive into their car.

They claim the van driver got out with a golf club, made threats, hit one of them with the club, and also attempted to hit the car.

And they say they threw eggs to defend themselves.

They Mercedes group said the van driver again swung the golf club at them in Wood Street, and they again threw eggs to defend themselves.

Police are keen to establish the facts of the incident and to speak to any independent witnesses.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 402 of June 20 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 1111.
