ALVESTON Badminton Club juniors under 13s won bronze medals at the annual county junior team tournament which was this year hosted by Rugby.
In a great start to their first match of the tournament, Vernon Aun and Jacob John ran out convincing winners in their boys’ singles games to put Alveston into a 2-0 lead against Coventry side Jubilee A.
However, with two games to go, they found themselves pegged back to 3-3 and it was all resting on the mixed doubles matches and, although Alveston’s Ben Hudson and Ruby Sinclair won, a surprise defeat for John and his partner Amy Dunnakey meant the honours were shared at 4-4.
In their second match, eventual tournament winners Rugby romped into a 4-0 lead after the singles and, although Alveston recovered some pride in the doubles, they went down 6-2 in their only defeat of the day.
With the two toughest teams played, it was plain sailing in the final two matches as Jubilee B were defeated 7-1 and another Coventry side Racqueteers were whitewashed 8-0.
Alveston were eyeing second place but Jubilee A surprisingly held Rugby to a draw in the final game of the day and this result meant Jubilee A pipped third placed Alveston to the runners-up spot.
