Basketball Storms into action in Stratford

Stratford Editorial 13th May, 2014 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

STRATFORD Storm – a new basketball team – has been developed in just ten weeks at Stratford Leisure Centre with the help and support of CSW (Coventry, Solihull & Warwickshire) Sport.

Funded by the Sportivate project – designed to engage 14 to 25-year-olds to take up active sport on a regular basis – Storm has now grown its participants to over 25 and this number increases every week.

Since January a group of local players have been practising hard at the leisure centre under the watchful eye of the coaching team on a Friday night from 7pm.

Every week the coaches put the players through a series of drills to develop fundamental skills along with fitness and teamwork sessions which are essential to the ethos of the team.

Last Friday Stratford Storm took part in their first competitive match at the leisure centre against a well organised team from Trojans Basketball in Coventry and emerged worthy winners.

Along with the senior team, Storm is now developing a younger group of players (14 to 18 years) and plans are being made for another group (12 to 14 years).

The future looks bright for basketball in Stratford so, if you want to learn to play or even get qualified in coaching, refereeing and table officiating, then the club has something for everyone to get involved with.

It is also looking to develop women’s, girls’ and disability teams in the near future, so for more information please contact the leisure centre.
