WARWICKSHIRE women made a winning start in the first round of the Johns Trophy as they defeated Worcestershire 116-105, giving them 17 points to their opponents’ five.

The match was the first of three round-robin contests and highest winning Warwickshire rink was Maureen Edwards with Pat Bax (both Rugby Thornfield), Dawn Horne (RLS) and Helen Harris (Stoke) who won 27-10.

Moira Parsons (Welford) with Kirsty Richards (Kings Heath), Hannah Smith and Lisa Smith (both Avenue Leamington) were fairly evenly matched for the first half of the game before pulling away to win 22-18.

Maureen Tims with Helen Slimm (both Whitnash), Di Medhurst (Stoke) and Di Thurlbeck (Lillington) were evenly matched and 9-9 at 12 ends was a good reflection of the game, which finished with them winning 18-16.

Jenny Corn with Margaret Stephens (both Lillington), Liz Westell (Welford) and Elaine Taylor (Stoke) were similarly evenly matched throughout and eventually drew 19-19.

Pat Moore (Three Spires) with Joy Cooke (Blossomfield), Heather Mills (Grange Ladies) and Liz Wooding (Avenue Coventry) kept a balanced score and were 12-12 at 12 ends but were just unable to hold their opponents off and finished 21-16 down.

Sue Hornsby (Lillington) with Sharon Keal (Snitterfield), Wendy Holloway (Welford) and Debbie Bloxham (Stratford) fell 17-0 down but valiantly battled on to end just 21-14 behind.

President Chris Ward (Lillington) was delighted with victory and being able to present a colt badge to Hannah Smith (Avenue Leamington), who is the county’s youngest player and one to watch for the future.

When the men meet the ladies

THE ANNUAL challenge match between Warwickshire men and ladies is always popular and certainly very competitive, with this year being no different.

The men were out to show their prowess and eventually emerged 125-82 victors, but not without a fair few battles on the way.

Highest winning women’s rink was Pat Moore (Three Spires) with Chris Cooke (Southam), Dawn Horne and Donna Kerr (both RLS), who emerged 14-11 victors.

Elaine Taylor with Chris Roberts (both Stoke), Margaret Stephens (Lillington) and Lynne Innes (Stratford) claimed a thrilling one-shot victory and Jenny Corn (Lillington) with Lynn Houghton (Avenue, Leamington), Linda Linney and Debbie Bloxham (both Stratford) earned an 18-18 draw.

Maureen Edwards with Yvonne Bromfield (both Rugby Thornfield), Joy Cooke (Blossomfield) and Gloria Higgins (RLS) were pipped 17-15, but Maureen Tims’ and Jacqui Cook’s teams were beaten 32-7 and 32-12 respectively.

Following the match at Wolvey, Liz Crispin was presented with her blazer badge on her home green.
