SHAKESPEARE Swords fencers Barney Halliwell and Sophia Potter have been selected by British Fencing for the Senior World Fencing Championships in Cairo, Egypt later this month.
The pair both fence at Shakespeare Swords in Stratford with Halliwell residing in Wellesbourne and Potter in Studley and have fenced for the club since primary school.
And both form part of a four-strong squad of fencers in their respective categories after they were awarded discretionary selection places.
Shakespeare Swords Head Coach Chris Buxton said: “We’re extremely proud of their achievements, it is testament to all the work they’ve put into their fencing over the years.
“They both had excellent records at junior and under-20 level, I’m just really pleased they’re starting to make an impact at senior level.
“We have so many young fencers at the club, to see athletes go on to represent Great Britain at age group and senior level is inspiring for them and that extra motivation to keep training and working hard.
“It’s a top level competition, the competition is over two days, both of them will want to make the second day, once you are in the main draw of the competition you just have to see where that takes you.”
The duo both recently represented Great Britain at the Senior European Fencing Championships in Turkey in the sabre competition.
Halliwell finished 22nd in the men’s tournament whilst Potter placed 54th in the women’s event.
The championships are scheduled to take place from Friday, July 15 to Saturday, July 23.
