Grundy bags six in Stratford win

Stratford Editorial 1st May, 2019   0

ALEX Marney and Archie Walker produced a match-turning seventh-wicket partnership before a six-wicket haul from Tom Grundy sealed Stratford’s first win of the Warwickshire League Premier Division season.

The Panthers were in deep trouble when, having won the toss and batted first at home to Handsworth, they slipped to 74-6.

Only Dexter Purser (21) and Luke Nardone (27) resisted among the early order batsmen but Marney and Walker revived the innings with a partnership of 101. Their century stand took just 134 balls.

Walker finished top-scorer with 73 off 108 balls, scoring six fours and one six, and Marney’s 55 came off 61 balls, including six fours, as Stratford reached 204-9 off their 50 overs.

Ittian Bowens was the pick of the Handsworth bowlers, taking 3-42.

Stratford’s bowlers never allowed the visitors to get a foothold in the game as wickets tumbled. Grundy sent back the first four batsmen with just 36 on the board and it got worse as Handsworth slipped to 41-8.

Only Kenrick Smith withstood the bowling assault with an unbeaten 42 off 53 balls but Handsworth were all out for 99 in the 31st over after Purser clean-bowled Bilal Zameer.

Grundy led the way with 6-44 in 15 overs, Purser took 2-8 in 3.3 overs and Sam Douthwaite took the other wicket.

Nick Jones top-scored for Stratford 2nds as they had to settle for a losing draw in a rain-hit game at Dorridge in Division Four.

Dorridge, having been put into bat, reached 215-8 in their 50 overs, with Sam Smith the mainstay with 50 off 87 balls and Jesper Grace smacking 48 off 38 balls. Tom Hatch snapped up 4-45 and Will Noble 3-48.

In reply, opener Jones hit 44 and Noble 23 but they were 119-5 when rain forced an abandonment.
